August 2006 YStore News

Welcome

I love August hot nights in the summer, but then I realize we only have three months until the busiest shopping day of the year arrives.

With Christmas right around the corner, most store owners are wondering how they can prepare for the upcoming season.  Your customers will be ready to shop, but is your store ready?  Can potential customers find your store?  Does your website appeal to your targeted customer?  Do you have enough content on your site for your customers to make an informed decision about purchasing?

When shopping online, people want to feel secure.  They want to know that the credit card information they provide to you will be safe. When a new store opens locally and we go to check it out, we get a feel of how the store is run just by taking a look around.  Are the walls clean or is there dirt everywhere? Are the shelves dusted?  Are the products located in boxes thrown about the room or are they arranged nice and neat? Does the person behind the counter make us feel safe?  If the clerk is wearing a mask, we would walk out of the door immediately.  When shopping online it really is no different.

Let's start with the walls.  Is your site laid out nice and neat or are your products scattered about?  What about the design of your site?  Does it look thrown together without any structure?  Can your customer immediately tell what kind of business you are running based upon your site? Think of your customer as window shopping.  We want that customer to come inside, take a look around, and purchase from us.  We can achieve this by offering our customers a professional looking site. We can entice our customers with cross-sells that will guide the customer to go down different aisles and pick up things that maybe they were not looking for (but we know they need).

Whether we shop at the local mall or online, the store needs to invite us in. Take a look at some of the larger retail sites online (Wal-Mart, Penny's, Target, etc).  Look at their Frequently Asked Questions page.  Look at their Return Policy.  How difficult is it to find information on contacting the company?  Does your site have this information as well?  Continue to look through the web site of these larger companies.  Often times you will find pages completely devoted to their security and privacy policy for the customer.  These larger companies are not doing these pages just because they feel like it.  Marketing research shows that customers will feel more secure shopping with these companies when the information is provided.  Many times customers won't even read the information.  They just want to see that this information is available for them.

Compare your site's informational pages with the big retailers.  Will your customers feel as comfortable with you as they do shopping with the big boys?  If not, refine these pages.
