Yahoo's new Floating Cart and Mini Shopping Cart for Yahoo Store Owners is a much needed upgrade!
A floating cart allows merchants to display important
order, shipping, and store promotion information to customers, while keeping
them in the shopping flow.
When the floating cart is enabled for your store, you can offer the
following checkout features to your customers, without causing them to exit
your store pages to a separate checkout flow:
- Display the items currently in the shopper's cart, along with the
quantity of each item added.
- Display the order subtotal.
- Allow customers to increase or decrease the quantity of each item
ordered, and to remove items.
- Offer customers the ability to calculate shipping costs to US and
- Let customers apply a coupon to their order.
- Offer a free shipping promotion, and display messages both before
and after an order qualifies for free shipping.
A mini-cart shows customers a summary of their order
information, including the number of items and order subtotal, even if the
floating cart is closed or not enabled. When the floating cart is enabled
for a store, but is closed, customers can click on the mini-cart to re-open
the floating cart.
What types of stores should use the floating cart?
Use of a floating cart is recommended for stores from which customers are
likely to purchase more than one item per order, such as stores that sell
apparel, craft supplies, sporting goods, food items, cosmetics, books,
music, or DVDs, as a few examples.
By installing a floating cart, merchants create a shopping flow that
keeps customers on store pages when they add an item to their cart, wish to
modify their cart contents, calculate shipping costs, apply a coupon to
their order, or see their order subtotal. By keeping customers on store
pages while performing these actions, rather than taking them directly to
checkout, customers may be encouraged to shop for additional items and
increase their order value.
Stores that sell big-ticket items, such as appliances or furniture, do
not typically display a floating cart to their customers. Since customers of
these stores are mainly shopping for and purchasing one item only, a common
shopping flow for these stores is to immediately take customers to checkout
to complete their order.
All types of stores may wish to include a mini-cart within their store
pages, to display a basic summary of selected cart information to customers,
without affecting the shopping and checkout flow.
