This
article has been transcribed from a video on how to get MySpace traffic
- you can follow along and use it to get traffic for your website).
It's time now to take a look at My Space, which is one of the biggest
success stories on the internet in the past couple years.
Now if you've not considered My Space as a source of traffic for your
business or your website, you've really been missing out big style. A
lot of people assume that My Space is just for kids or teenagers that
don't have any money.
Although it's used by younger people, there's a large percentage of
people who are actually in the older age bracket, 30's and 40's,
with good money to spend, on My Space. I can't quote the exact
percentage to you, but I have heard figures as high as 40% of people,
and even as high as 50% of people that are actually in that age bracket
using My Space.
So if you just try to sweep it under the carpet and say, "Well, it's
not for me. It's just a bit of fun. It's like a fad," let me tell
you it's not. It's a great way to get traffic into your website.
The other thing about My Space is that it's massive. It's just
huge! There's so many people using it. We are talking well over 100
million people using it, so if you're going to ignore it you're
missing out on a lot of potential traffic.
Before I go in and show you how you get set up and some of the ways you
can get traffic using My Space, there are four core concepts that you
need to get clear when you're setting up your My Space account or
when you're using My Space to get traffic. I want to go through those
first.
These four concepts are what I call the 4 H's of getting traffic from My Space.
The first H is humor. If you use humor, and I'll use the American
spelling there with apologies to all the British guys...there's more
Americans than there are Brits...if you use humor in your marketing on
My Space, not only are you going to appeal to more people but you're
also going to actually go under the radar.
My Space has wised up to the fact now that people are trying to use it
for commercial purposes. You can't go in there right off the bat and
start trying to sell stuff or get people on a list or send them to your
websites. It's not going to work.
But if you use humor it can often mask what you're actually trying to
do, or actually put you over as more believable and more genuine. So
that's the first H - humor.
The second H is heartfelt. It's only by being heartfelt in the
messages that you're putting over on My Space and actually by being
genuine that you're going to attract a lot of traffic and you're
going to actually get your message across effectively.
If you've got any experience at My Space, or just any experience of
email, you'll know that you can get inundated with spam coming in.
"Buy this, buy this, go and check this out," and it's immediately
obvious that it's not genuine because it's not heartfelt.
So you've got have a heartfelt sentiment to what you're actually
doing. You've actually got to be speaking from your heart, without
being too deep about it. You have to be real. You have to keep it real
on My Space. You can't try and go in and be a corporate guy or
marketing guy or business guy. You've just got to be yourself.
The third H is helpful. You've got to be helpful. You have to help
people out with the information you're providing. There's no point
just going on there and speaking about yourself over and over and
saying, "I do this, I'm so great, come and listen to me." You've
got to be helpful. You've got to actually help people with the
information you're giving.
If you do that and help people get to where they want to be, help them
with their website or their traffic or their life or their hobby,
whatever it is, you're going to get a lot more traffic as a result.
You get more people joining you as friends on My Space, more people
sending other people to your site recommending you, and so on. So
you've got to be helpful.
The final of the four H's is the human story. People love stories. If
you can build in your own human story about your life or how you
started out in business or why you set up this My Space account or
something that happened to you, before it happened, during what the
process was, and then after if you can build that whole story into your
online persona with My Space, it's going to be really powerful and
people latch onto that, because people like people.
They're not going to buy from a marketer. They're not going to buy
from a business person. They're not going to buy from a scammer or a
spammer or somebody's who just trying to get them to buy something.
They're going to buy from another human.
So these are the four things. I know these are a bit ethereal and kind
of high level, but these are very important when you're setting up a
My Space account. You've got to remember humor. You've got to be
heartfelt. You're got to keep the right sentiment in mind and be
yourself. And you've got to be helpful to others. You've got to
keep that human aspect and that human story to actually what you're
saying on your account.
So with that said, how do you actually go in and set up an account if
you haven't got one already? Don't skip this, because there's
some parts in this that you won't have heard before, even if you've
already got an account. So go through this.
For those of you who aren't yet on My Space, don't be embarrassed.
I know a lot of you will have discounted it, but hopefully now you
realize that this is a big opportunity to get traffic.
So what do you do? Well, you go to www.MySpace.com and you click on sign up, so let's just go ahead and do it, sign up.
