Are Sales Down? It's time to get S.M.A.R.T.

Help CallThe phone rings, Help! My sales are down. My business is going under. There is something wrong with my website. HELP!

Me: Lets start with taking a look at your analytics.

Store Owner: No, you need to look at my website. Something is wrong.

Something may be wrong but its usually not the website. Its the store owner. Their business is going through a down period.

Every business goes through this EVERY business.

You have times when sales are up, you have times when sales are down, and you have times when sales are somewhere in between.

Its a cycle that happens month after month and year after year. After you have been in business for a few years, you begin to see the trends and can make adjustments.

Summertime at the Beach

For instance, many store owners who sell novelty type of items may find themselves with lower sales than usual. Its summer time. People are at the beach, taking vacations, and not thinking about buying your products.

So what are you going to do?

You are going to get S.M.A.R.T.

Its time to create a goal AND make sure that you are being S.M.A.R.T. about it!

SMART GoalsStep 1 Specific

Create a very specific goal for your store. Your goal should answer:

  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Why

Example I want to increase traffic to my store by 10% within the next 12 weeks so that I can increase my sales by 10%.

Step 2 Measurable

We have to measure our goals to insure that we meet and exceed our goals.

Ask yourself:

  • How much?
  • How many?
  • How will you know when you reach your goal?
Find a way to measure your goals. Use Google Analytics, Yahoo Analytics, or even the Reports section of your Yahoo Store.

Step 3 Attainable

Take a look at your goal again. Is it attainable?

Saying that you want to increase traffic by 100% in 4 weeks might be attainable with a lot of PPC money but not realistic.

Yes you want to stretch yourself but dont go crazy.

As you may have read, I have been working very hard on losing weight and my goal was to lose 100 pounds over the course of 10-12 months. My goal each week is to lose 2 - 4 pounds so that I can stay on target.

I always shoot for 4 pounds. Its a stretch and yes, I have to work out at least an hour a day or more in order to achieve the results. However, if I was going for 10 pounds a week that would just be ridiculous.

Step 4 Relevant

You need a goal that is right for your business.

  • Is your goal something that matters to you?
  • Does it match your needs for right now?
  • Are you the right person for the job or do you need help?

Step 5 Time-bound

Finally, you need to figure out some dates.

Just like I know how much I should be losing each week to make my goals, you have to create your own check points.

  • When will you check to make sure you are on target?
  • How long will you give yourself to complete your goal?
  • What can you start working on right now to help you reach your goals?
  • What can you do tomorrow or next week?
  • Is your target date attainable?

Conclusion
