What is the #1 reason for not being found in Google?
On October 26th our new radio show Ecom Experts premiered on
WebmasterRadio.fm. Topic -
SEO for eCommerce
We love our new home and we are very excited to get the radio show up and
going again. We know how much many of you enjoyed our weekly show and want to
make sure we bring the awesome information to you each and every week.
For our very first show, I invited Rob Snell to join me and talk about
SEO for eCommerce.
Here is a little bit more about Rob Snell:
Rob Snell is a co-owner of Gun Dog Supply, an online specialty retailer of dog training collars and hunting dog supplies, and the managing partner of Snell Brothers, a consulting firm specializing in small business e-commerce and search marketing. Rob has extensive Yahoo Store experience with both family-owned stores and consulting clients. Since 1997, the Snell Brothers have designed, developed, marketed and/or maintained hundreds of Yahoo Stores that have generated millions and millions of dollars in online sales. He posts in his
blog on a regular basis
and Rob was selected by Wiley Computer Publishing to write the book "Starting a Yahoo Business For Dummies."
So what was the #1 reason why most people can't find their store in Google?
The answer is actually quite simple - content.
Most store owners
will use the description given to them. If they take one sentence and look
it up in Google, they will find 500 - 1,000 stores using the exact same
product description.
GOOGLE WANTS UNIQUE RESULTS
Yes, I yelled
that and I am sorry. However, we see too many store owners worry about title
tags, description tags, links, and everything else. Yet their content is
copied and not unique.
During my interview with Rob, he mentioned
looking up a Garmin product. So let's do that now.
I am going to the
Garmin website and finding a product. The
Oregon 300 looks nice. Let's see
how many retailers are using the very first sentence.
Holy Cow!!! 10,700 websites are using the very first line from Garmin's
website.
Ok, let's try the first sentence in the second paragraph.
Still 689 online retailers are using the second paragraph.
Google wants
to provide its users with UNIQUE results. Especially on the first page. So
now let's take a look at what type of pages show up when we look for this
product.
Starting from the top:
#1 and #3 - Garmin Website
#2 and
# 9 - Other retail websites you can purchase from
#4, #6, and # 7 -
Shopping and Comparison websites
#5 and #10 - Garmin 300 Reviews
#8 and Highlighted in the middle - YouTube and Video
What does
this information tell us?
If you are going to survive as an
online retailer, your website has to be found. Videos are important for this
product. Are you using video to sell your product? Comparison shopping sites
are very important for this product. Are you being found in those comparison
shopping websites? Product reviews are important. Have you wrote your own
product reviews?
Speaking of product reviews, listen to Rob Snell as
he tells us how he received a 40% conversion rate by using product reviews
and learn more about writing unique content for your website. As you have
just learned - it is THAT important!
Listen to
SEO for eCommerce now.
Sincerely,
Shawna Fennell
