Stop Putting New Tires On a Car That Doesn't Run!!
Let's play pretend for the next few minutes. Let's pretend that you have a
car that doesn't run. So you put new tires on the car thinking that will solve
all your problems.
Here is the problem; the car doesn't even start up. So you open the hood and
you see there is no engine. Those shiny new tires are nice but, without that
engine honey... you aren't going anywhere.
Now I want you to picture your website. You try and try to rank number 1 in
the search engines. By now you would be happy just to rank on the first page.
So you start trading and buying links with anyone you can find.
Your website doesn't have an engine. Your website does not have any content.
You as a store owner know that you have to have good solid unique content.
Yet, most store owners skip this part and jump into links or Meta tags.
Those are all nice to have for your new car. However, it's like painting your
car and adding new tires. You still are not going anywhere because you have no
If you want to start driving your car, you have to put in an engine first.
Then you can work on painting the car. Then you can work on adding new tires.
Then you can work on upgrading that stereo.
But, if you want to drive your car right now.... You HAVE to have an engine
So let's talk about your content.
- Have you copied the manufacturer's description?
- Have you copied the dropshipper's description?
- Have you copied the competitor's description?
You have no engine. You are not going anywhere so you might as well sit
on the porch and look at your new car sitting there.
You could make a plan that starts today. You could make a plan to install a
new engine right away and be driving your new car in a matter of weeks or even
Step 1 - Understand Your Customer Is
Create a persona of your customer. Is your customer male or female? How old
is your customer? What type of income do they make? What type of language do
they speak? How can you help them? What problems do they have? How can you solve
Step 2 - Learn How They Find You
Now it is time to learn what keywords and phrases they are using to find your
products. Do they use one word, two words, or even 5? Do they look for your
products by brand name or model number? Do they know the UPC number? Keyword
research is the most important phase in your plan. Make sure you spend lots of
time here. Think of keyword research as your oil that makes the engine run nice
Step 3 - Update 5 Pages a Day - Every Single Day
Take what you have learned in Step 1 and Step 2 and start applying them now.
Update 5 pages every single day. If you have extra time, do 10. But make sure
you do 5 pages every single day. If you have difficulty writing, talk into a
microphone, and transcribe. Talk to your customer in a way they understand. If
they are teenagers, use slang. If they are the older crowd, stay away from words
they will not understand. Solve their problems using keywords they are going to
use to find you. Do not write to your customers thinking that you have to use
your keywords over and over again. Write to your customers exactly how you would
talk to them.
"Would you say, "This blue widget will solve all your blank problems because
this blue widget can do this and the blue widget can do that. Did you know that
the blue widget can also do this too? Grab the blue widget now because this blue
widget is going fast and you don't want to miss out on buying this blue widget.
This blue widget could sell out so fast because everyone wants a blue widget."
Sure, we used our keyword blue widget but, we also lost the sale. So really
what was the point of getting them to our website?
