all know that the holiday season is RIGHT around the corner. Last month we
started talking about the different ways that you can increase conversion rates.
After all, what is the point of getting someone to your website if we cannot
convert them into a customer that is buying!
This month we are going to focus on your shopping cart. You have got them to
your website. You have gotten your customer to place an item in their shopping
cart. Awesome, but you still do not have the sale yet.
They are now looking at your shopping cart page and now they have a BIG
decision, am I going to pull out my credit card information and give it to this
This is the last page your want your customer to do any thinking whatsoever. The
only thing you want your customer to do here is grab their credit card
information and input the information into your shopping cart.
So what would stop a customer from grabbing their wallet?
Let’s take a moment to place our “Customer Shoes” on. Go to your website (yes,
right now) and add something to your cart. What do you see? What are your
questions? Are they being answered?
Now, go find that exact same product on a competitor’s website. Add the item to
their shopping cart. What is the first thing you see? Do you have questions? Are
they being answered? (P.S. Start taking notes NOW)
Here are a few questions that I look at when I do a review for a customer:
Is the shopping cart secure?
Are there any warnings popping up to scare me away?
Does the shopping cart have a professional look and feel?
Are there any trusted secure symbols that I am familiar with giving me a warm
and cozy feeling?
How much is shipping?
Do I have to log in?
Is this the first page of many that I have to fill out, or is it one page?
If there is more than one page, how many do I have to do? What do I have to
do on each one?
What if I have a question? Is the phone number there?
What if I need to make a return? Can I open a new window and get that
information or am I being taken away from the cart?
What type of payments do they accept?
How long do I have to wait for my package to arrive?
Can I just click on a link and get all the information I need without having
to leave my cart?
What if I want to do more shopping? Can I get back to my cart easily?
What if I want to add more quantities?
This is just the beginning. If you really want to know what your customers want, go out there and shop at your competitor's websites. You do not have to buy anything today, but do they make you want to grab your credit card?
Are you remembering to take notes at each website? Make sure you do.
Ok, now let’s go shopping at the big boy stores. The Wal-Mart’s, Target’s,
Macy’s, etc… They have tons of money to spend on figuring out what works and
what doesn’t. When you add something to their cart, what do you see? Again, make
notes of everything.
This is research. This can make or break your Christmas. Research a lot. Take a
lot of notes.
Now, go back to your website. Add something to your cart. What do you see now?
GUARANTEE you will find something that you need to add, edit, or remove.
