Factors Influencing Online Shopping

”What

Yes it’s that time again. Less than 3 months until the Holiday Season. Are you thinking about your sales for this coming season? You should already have a marketing plan for next year’s gift giving seasons such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Too soon you say? Not soon enough we say.

Most information about what worked on your site or what didn’t work can be documented along the way so the past writes your future marketing plan. Analyze what worked, re-engineer what didn’t, and contact your customers to see what their needs are for the holiday.

ComScore, Inc. has a wonderful white paper out that is must for your reading list –

Introducing the Online Shopping Customer Experience Study

Be sure to read it in its entirety.

We are listing three of our own concerns for your website in this month’s newsletter.

Let’s go over three things you can do to increase your holiday sales:

Shipping - Shopping Cart - Survey

Shipping

According to the findings from comScore, Inc., although free shipping will help the sell, online shoppers are willing to pay more to get their products faster. And their big concern is exactly when their product will arrive.

Now let’s review your shipping policy:

Is your shipping policy simple? If your policy is complicated, your customers become confused and move on to another store. Keep it very simple.

Does your policy clearly state your shipping charge? Do you have a flat rate for shipping? Not all businesses can offer free shipping, but can you offer free shipping after buying a certain dollar amount? This has been known to increase the average order value. But if you set a price, base it on your products. If most of your orders are under $25.00, offer free shipping on all orders over $30. And always test what works the best.

Do you offer different methods of shipping? Do you offer faster shipping at a higher cost? This is going to be very important in the middle of December. Check with your shippers and verify their policy to ensure yours will match.

Does your shipping policy accurately describe when you ship your products? Some businesses receive orders and ship the next day, others will ship 2 or 3 days later. This can have a huge impact on when the product is delivered.

If you have a Yahoo! Merchant Solutions Store, you can provide updated information to your customer. On the Order Page, you have several options to update your customer including "Will ship within 24 hours”, "Will ship in 2-3 days” etc. Once you have shipped your product, be sure to go back to the order and select the shipping method and tracking information. Your customer will receive an email with the latest information as well direct them to the shipping vendor’s page to track their package. Run a test order and review the emails that are being sent to your customer to ensure your policies are consistent.

Shopping Cart

Cart abandonment can be huge if your shopping cart does not display trust. Be sure you Shopping Cart matches the look and feel of your site. A completely different looking shopping cart will cause a flight response and no sale.

Provide links to your policies so if there are any questions, they can be answered quickly.

Display your telephone number with the call to action of "Any Questions? Call now!”

Make sure shipping charges are correctly calculated. Run test orders if you change anything in your Store Control Panel.

Provide information about your estimated delivery times.

Surveys

ComScore provided their information by conducting a focus group to survey online shoppers’ experiences. Have you taken a survey of your customers to see if they are satisfied with their experience on your site? You can set this up through third party vendors such as SurveyMonkey but is that personal enough?

What did you say – "Personal Survey? How can I take a Personal Survey?” Easy – Call your customers and ask:

  • "How did you find us?”
  • "Was the product everything we said it would be?"
  • "Was the product everything we said it would be?"
  • "Was the product everything we said it would be?"
  • "Was it easy finding the product on our site?"
  • "Was the product delivered on time?"

Then thank them for the information and offer a discount on future orders. This is a great time to ask for another order.
